Quenching of an Automotive Lower Ring
With our expertise in both metallurgy and the mechanics of heat treating processes, Nelson Heat Treating Co., Inc. has the ability to pinpoint the best process for improving the strength of a particular component without compromising its size and shape. We have a strong, well-established reputation for our ability to process small, close tolerance parts and frequently heat treat components for clients in the automotive industry.
We processed the lower ring highlighted here in a bulk quantity of 22,000 pieces. Constructed from 4130 alloy steel, the strengthening process called for heating to temperatures in the 1550°F to 1625°F and then quenching in oil. For this project, we employed our shaker furnace, which is particularly suitable for continuous heat treatment of very small parts. Computer operated, it allowed us to keep precise control over the temperature profile, protective atmosphere, processing time, and quenchant. We progressively heated up the workpieces, maintained them for the necessary time, and then dropped them into the integrated quench tank. Once the parts were completed, we applied a rust inhibitor to prevent corrosion during transport and storage.
Our expert process capabilities allowed us to keep shrinkage to 0.0006″ overall and maintain the tight dimensional tolerances achieved by the manufacturer. Hardness testing confirmed that the parts had the strength properties called for in the customer specification. This project took us five days to complete.
Our shop is extremely versatile and we have years of experience serving and supporting the manufacturing community. If you are interested in learning more about our heat treating services, contact us today.
