Heat Treatment of an Electric Conduit
Over the past 60+ years here at Nelson Heat Treating Co., Inc. we have made a substantial investment in equipment and technologies in order to bolster our expertise and expand our services. Our range of equipment combined with our technical competencies allows us to rapidly and economically manage a diverse range of projects.
One of our projects involved heat treating conduit for a client in the electrical industry. This order contained products ranging from ¼” to 1.0″ in diameter and called for a bright annealing process. Based on the volume of parts and the fact that they were of various sizes, we used our belt furnace for production. Our continuous belt furnace is extremely versatile and allowed us to easily load and simultaneously process a variety of parts at medium to high volume.
Customer specifications called for a bright anneal process for the cold rolled steel parts. We programmed our controlled atmosphere belt furnace to create a nitrogen atmosphere at specific proportions and hold the temperature to 1550° for one hour, raise it to 1650°F, then cool to below 300°F. This technologically advanced furnace provided excellent part-to-part temperature uniformity to consistently deliver the desired strength properties along with a scale-free surface with a bright finish.
Quality assurance involved both hardness testing and bend testing to confirm that the conduit satisfied the requirements of the customer specification. We continue to process these components for the client at the rate of 1,050 to 21,700 lbs. per order and deliver them back within a 3-5 day turnaround.
